Fruit and ornamental tree pruning
Winter pruning of apple, pear, plum, apricot and ornamental trees up to a height reachable from a ladder. Dead, diseased and crossing branches are removed.
When
January–March, November
How often
Once a year
One visit
An hour to a full day
How it's done
Pruning is done on a dry, frost-free day while the tree is bare. First the dead and diseased branches come off, then those growing inward or crossing. The cut is just above an outward-facing bud so the crown grows wide.
When we say no
We don't send people up trees beyond ladder height. For those, a rope-access climber or arborist is called.
Good to know
Cherries and apricots don't like winter pruning. They are pruned in summer, after harvest.
