New lawn: seeding and sod
A new lawn from seed or sod, with soil preparation, leveling and the first watering. The seed mix is chosen for the sun and how much foot traffic it will get.
When
March–May, September–October
How often
One-off
One visit
One to three days
How it's done
The soil is cleared, tilled and leveled with a slight slope so water doesn't pool. Seed is sown crosswise and rolled. Sod is laid staggered like bricks and watered the same day. If there will be automatic irrigation, the pipes go in before the lawn.
When we say no
We don't sow grass in July and August without irrigation. The seeds sprout and burn within a week.
Good to know
For the first three weeks a new lawn needs watering every day and no walking on it.
